The French-American School of Music’s (FASM) Fall Fundraising Gala

COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL HOSTS A FUNDRAISER FOR CHILDREN

The French-American School of Music (FASM) hosted its fall fundraising gala on Thursday, November 5th at the magnificent Ana Tzarev Gallery in Manhattan. This year’s event was a wine tasting and silent auction that benefited the FASM Gabriella Lengyel Financial Aid Fund, which offers financial support to musically gifted ad promising students who demonstrate talent and achievement. Ms. Lengyel (1920 - 1993), violinist, pedagog, and mentor of Maestro Jean-Pierre Schmitt, founder and executive director of the FASM, dedicated a great part of her life and career to the education and development of young violinists from around the world. The fund relies mostly on contributions from foundations, local businesses, and individuals supporting the school’s artistic and development initiatives. Following Gabriella Lengyel’s philosophy, the FASM prides itself on the education of children and adults alike in a professional and nurturing environment.

Live classical music, provided by a trio of professional musicians, filled the grand space of the Ana Tzarev Gallery, which is the sole global representative for the work of the artist Ana Tzarev. The Gallery also presents an ongoing schedule of special exhibitions by other artists consistent with Ana Tzarev’s commitment to cultural awareness and social consciousness.

Among the guests were a number of corporate and longtime donors to the FASM along with a host of new friends interested in its mission to “cultivate an appreciation of music in the community.” Keeping in tune with the school’s name, the wine, provided by 67 Wine, represented an array of flavors from both France and the United States. Cheese, provided by Schratter Foods, and canapés, created by renowned chefs Alain Sailhac and Marc Bauer of the French Culinary Institute, beautifully complimented the assortment of wines. A silent auction was also held in an adjoining room highlighting items in keeping with the theme of the evening. Item sponsors included Metrokane, Wine Spectator, Georg Jensen, and The Food Network.

For nearly 20 years the FASM has welcomed students of all nationalities, diverse backgrounds, and levels of experience. Through teaching designed to address progressing stages of both intellectual and technical musical understanding along with the expertise and dedication of our faculty, students learn to integrate music into their daily lives. This is accomplished primarily through private one-on-one lessons. Training is provided for a wide variety of musical instruments including piano, strings, guitar, flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, recorder, and voice. The school also offers music theory to both adults and children. Performing ensembles include a children’s chorus and orchestra, and a mixed ensemble for adults. The FASM serves its community through artistic programs and fosters an interaction through public performances of its student body and faculty.

The FASM would like to thank The New York Observer and France Today for their coverage of the event. The School also further thanks its sponsors and foundations for their continued support including The Arts & Letters Foundation, The Billy Rose Foundation, and The Florence Gould Foundation.
