The 2009 Hyde Park Jazz Festival Benefit

Record Crowds Jazzed by 2009 Hyde Park Jazz Festival

Over 20,000 jazz fans of all ages jammed 13 music venues in Hyde Park to listen to over 150 of Chicago’s great jazz artists perform for 15 non-stop hours. The 3rd annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival on Saturday, September 26 celebrated music and the community, proving once again that Chicago’s south side is the home to the city’s great tradition of jazz. The free Jazz Festival brought together jazz lovers from the South Side, the Chicago metro area and from around the country to enjoy the music played in Hyde Park’s unique landmark and nationally renowned cultural and artistic venues.

The festival kicked off at 11:00 a.m. under dark skies with Ken Chaney’s Awakening Band at the DuSable Museum of African American History and the University of Chicago U-High School Jazz Band on the James W. Wagner Center Stage. As the clouds parted the crowds grew. By 2:30 p.m., under blue skies, music venues were full throughout the neighborhood as seven concerts played simultaneously at the DuSable and Smart Museums, Little Black Pearl Art & Design Center, Hyde Park Art Center, Oriental Institute, Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House where the music was also amplified outside to the crowds that were unable to get indoor seating.

Hyde Park restaurants and retailers experienced record setting business throughout the day from 61st Street north to 47th Street as a result of the jazz enthusiasts walking or taking advantage of the free shuttle service around the festival area. “This is an amazing day,” said a visitor from New York City. “There is great jazz music being played everywhere you turn in this neighborhood. It is like a musical wonderland.”

Over 300 volunteers worked throughout the day and night to ensure that the musicians and audience members all enjoyed the event. “This is one of the best festivals around because you have such great musicians in one place,” said percussionist Ernie Adams about performing at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival. “When you play with people in your 'neighborhood,' there’s a certain connection there. It’s Chicagoans playing with each other. There’s some special creating going on. "

The Hyde Park Jazz Festival concluded at the Midnight Jam session with a standing room only crowd and lines around the block waiting to listen to Dee Alexander hosting over 30 performers at the International House until 2:00a.m. Following the Jam Session, performers, Festival organizers and audience members continued celebrating with breakfast at Mellow Yellow on 53rd Street to keep the magic going until almost sunrise.

The Jazz Festival that began only two years ago as an event to introduce visitors to Hyde Park’s arts and cultural venues through the universal appeal of great jazz music is evolving into a jazz tradition. At the conclusion of the Midnight Jam session, September 25, 2010 was announced as the date for the 4th annual Jazz Festival.

The Hyde Park Jazz Festival is produced by HyPa -- the Hyde Park Alliance for Arts and Culture, Hyde Park Jazz Society, and the University of Chicago. The 2009 sponsors of the Festival included The University of Chicago, Harper Court Arts Council, Chicago Park District, WDCB 90.9fm Listener- Supported Public Radio, The Chicago Community Trust, Bank of America, Chicago Jazz Magazine, The University of Chicago Medical Center, MAC Property Management, IFA Yoruba Contemporary Arts Foundation, Harris Bank, WHPK 88.5fm, Jazz Institute of Chicago, and Illinois Arts Council.
