Kick-off for The Ryan Licht Sang Bipolar Foundation’s Upcoming Chicago Bipolar Medical Briefing Lunc

More than fifty friends of The Ryan Licht Sang Bipolar Foundation gathered on Wednesday, October 6th for the “Kick-off” Committee Luncheon to begin planning for its 2011 Chicago Medical Briefing Luncheon.

Hosted in the intimate setting of the Women’s Athletic Club (WAC), the luncheon served as an opportunity for Foundation supporters to learn about the impact they have made in furthering the Foundation’s mission for the Quest For The Test™ as well as other advances made possible by the vital work of the Foundation. Attendees listened intently as one courageous young woman shared her personal story about living with Bipolar Disorder. Her personal account helped each guest better understand that there is “no face” which exemplifies this mental illness.

The Luncheon included a keynote address from Karen Swartz, M.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Swartz is the founder and director of the Adolescent Depression Awareness Program (ADAP), which is a school-based curriculum to educate high school students, teachers, and parents about teenage depression, bipolar disorder and suicide to help bring awareness and reduce the stigma associated with these illnesses. ADAP’s work is made possible in part by two annual grants to Johns Hopkins from The Ryan Licht Sang Bipolar Foundation. This year the Foundation announced that it is proudly partnering with The Chauncey and Marion D. McCormick Family Foundation to bring ADAP to high schools in the Chicago area.

The Luncheon concluded with a reminder that the 2011 The Ryan Licht Sang Bipolar Foundation’s Chicago Medical Briefing Luncheon will take place at The Casino on Wednesday, May 4th. Speakers at this year’s informative event include many of the Bipolar Disorder field’s most respected doctors, including Janet Wozniak, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital; Timothy Wilens, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School; James Potash, M.D., M.P.H., Arlene and Robert Kogod Professorship in Mood Disorders at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; David J. Kupfer, M.D., Chair, DSM-V Task Force, Professor and Former Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh Medical School; and Ellen Frank, Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology, Co-Director - Pittsburgh Bipolar Institute, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Chairmen of this year’s event are Mamie Walton, Abby O’Ne il, Amy Morro, and Marla London.
