Keep a Child Alive's (KCA) Black Ball

PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON, SIR RICHARD BRANSON AND SENEGALESE SINGER AND AFRICAN AMBASSADOR YOUSSOU N'DOUR HONORED AT KEEP A CHILD ALIVE'S SIXTH ANNUAL BLACK BALL

Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, John Mayer and Youssou N'dour Performance to Benefit Keep a Child Alive Raised $2.4 Million

Keep a Child Alive's (KCA) Black Ball, an annual benefit to raise funds to provide life-saving treatment and support to children and families in Africa and India affected by HIV/AIDS, held its sixth annual Black Ball last night. Nearly 1,000 guests attended the event at the Hammerstein Ballroom and raised more than $2.4 million for AIDS-affected children and families in Africa and India. The donations raised throughout the evening allow Keep a Child Alive (KCA) to continue the growth and expansion of their clinics and orphanages and provide the surrounding care to children and families infected or affected by the AIDS pandemic.

KCA Co-Founder Alicia Keys and KCA Global Ambassadors Iman and Padma Lakshmi hosted the Black Ball with last year’s Black Ball honoree Queen Latifah serving as Emcee. The evening began with a cocktail party followed by a seated dinner with extraordinary live performances by Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, John Mayer and Youssou N'dour. Other special guests in attendance were Usher, Swizz Beatz, Halle Berry, Samuel L. Jackson, Estelle, Mary J. Blige, Spike Lee, Robin Thicke, Tyler Perry, Nick Cannon, Kerry Washington, Terrence Howard, David Bowie, Adrian Grenier, Tyson Beckford, Christiane Amanpour, Roland Martin, Tommy Hilfiger, Donna D'Cruz and many more. This star-studded event raised hopes, dreams and millions of dollars to help keep children and families with HIV/AIDS in Africa and India alive.
This evening’s honorees were former President Bill Clinton, Sir Richard Branson and Youssou N'dour. President Bill Clinton was honored for his immeasurable achievements through the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI). Sir Richard Branson has cultivated sustainable change worldwide with Virgin Unite by uniting people to tackle tough social and environmental problems in an entrepreneurial way. Senegalese singer and African Ambassador Youssou N'dour uses his music to combat malaria and poverty.

"Keep a Child Alive will continue to serve the poor devastated by this disease, and we are so happy that more than 250,000 have already received our services since our inception. We will continue to fight for them as long as it takes," said KCA Co-Founder Alicia Keys.

The 2009 Black Ball was produced by OBO with a live auction by Hugh Edmeades & Tash Perrin of Christie’s. The décor was designed by KCA Creative Director, Earle Sebastian and the evening featured an amazing seated dinner designed by Top Chef’s Padma Lakshmi. Hennessy Black drinks were served, the highly versatile, new cognac from the world’s leading cognac house, supplied the delicious cocktails.

Sponsors of the event included ARISE Magazine, Hennessy Black, and Google.

Gift Bag items included: Toywatch, Queen by Queen Latifah Body Butter, Kenneth Cole Black Fragrances, Google sticker booklets, ARISE magazine, Hennessy Black, MAC Cosmetics, Sabit & Covergirl Cosmetics.
