Family Justice’s Annual Celebration
06/11/2009 - By New York City

Family Justice’s Annual Celebration

Family Justice, a New York-based national nonprofit organization focused on reforming the justice system, presented its Corporate Leadership and Justice Leadership awards at a June 11 event at the organization's national headquarters in New York City

Kenneth H. Zimmerman, who leads pro bono and public advocacy activities at Lowenstein Sandler PC, received the organization's 2009 Corporate Leadership Award, while Kings County First Assistant District Attorney Anne J. Swern, a prosecutor for more than 28 years, will be honored with the 2009 Justice Leadership Award.

"We are thrilled to recognize these two vital partners who are helping to develop innovative solutions for people cycling in and out of the justice system," said Carol Shapiro, president and founder of Family Justice. "Ken and Anne are leaders in the fight to transform communities where crime and involvement in the system take the greatest toll."

Mr. Zimmerman, a noted civil rights lawyer, guides the strategic direction and implementation of pro bono and public advocacy initiatives at Lowenstein Sandler, a corporate law firm with offices in Boston, New York, Palo Alto, and Roseland, New Jersey. Mr. Zimmerman was the founding executive director of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, a Newark-based urban advocacy and research organization. Ms. Swern has held a variety of roles as a public servant advocating on behalf of the people of Brooklyn. A longtime proponent of alternatives to incarceration, she oversees the Drug Treatment Alternative to Prison Program-the first prosecution-run program in the country that diverts prison-bound men and women convicted of felonies to residential drug treatment.

Family Justice's annual celebration drew approximately 100 guests and raised more than $30,000 for the organization, which promotes a family-focused approach to breaking cycles of involvement in the justice system. This approach is being adopted in cities ranging from San Francisco to Chicago to Richmond, and at state agencies in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Michigan Ohio, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.
